.....I thought ramadan already came months ago:
Sorry for not sending you a post to say HAPPY RAMADAN .....But after thinking:
the idea of not eating more than one meal per day is something we already do in Palestine so i thought that the only way i can feel ramadan and its spirituality is to do something else, dunno to waite to see what the people are going to do:
Every day on my way to college i see empty streets, i wonder where are they? the huge crowds in Rmallah who usually stop me from walking-running- to the next taxi!!!
In birzeit the avergae students are fasting, but many muslims are not, and most of those are doing it in public.....it's not a problem for me except for the times when it's just away to say i don't care and i don't respect your believes...
Going back home is more than a normal quit journy, after along tiring day full with classes and after minimizing the time for each class its getting a little bit easier, but stil i can't go to work in PYALARA because they limited the hours in ramadan, so i had more free time to walk in Ramallah every day at least trying to kill more time before its 5:30....Anyway since the beggining of ramadan i was searching for that thing that we call ( spirit of rmadan)...looking in streets, faces, shops, posters, everything......didn't find anything...all i found is people more confused, angrey, and of course hungrey...
Maybe i was waitting for a miracle... a big amount of happiness to fall above all the people's heads and i forgut that im one of those people and i was'nt that happy in ramadan as will....
Yes it's getting more and more different...ramadan is getting away from our hearts and affecting our stomaks more.......i shouldn't look at the sky for the answer, it's more than simple: it's not politics or economy that can make it better....it's TV.......just kidding:)
That's my question to you all: how can we feel the spirit of ramadan again?

Thank you for the post :)
First of all, i want to wish you all blessed Ramadan, and i hope that all of us can live the true purpose and meaning of Ramadan every day, every minute, no matter what.

There is no way that i can imagine or compare my Ramadan with yours in Palestine under Israeli occupation, opression and brutality. But think about this: in one of the worst life situations such as the one in occupied Palestine, whom do we ask for help, from whom do we expect help, to whom do we turn, whom do we trust, and on whom do we depend? Ramadan is just one of those months that should incourage us to strenghten our relationship with Allah, and this relationship is especially evident now because we are fasting, and we are fasting for the sake of Allah and nobody else.

I don't want to seem ignorant, nor do i want to belittle your pain. I only hope that in these brutal conditions you guys can reach to Allah and find strength, peace and refuge in Him. When i go through horrible times, which are not comparable with occupation you live with, i turn to Allah and seek refuge in Him, and it always helps to calm me down and make me less desperate. I'm writting this in hope to restore some of the joys believers have when they recognize the Creator and his Mercy. Imagine if you don't believe in Allah, and then you can feel the joy of believing in Him.
I don't know how much this has to do with the topic, but Ramadan is time to reflect and be with Allah :) despite the brutality of occupation, despite the despicable life conditions. Inshaallah, all of us will have blessed Ramadan.

I don't know what Ramadan spirits are, but for me Ramadan is about praying tarawee7, qeyam, and reading Qur'an. Unfortunately, I Don't have time to do these things because Im stuck with unpleasant tuff courses that takes all my time.

feeling the "spirit of ramadan" is something related to the individual... we cant say that it is a common feeling, when someone looses his intenal belief for something he will feel that all people lost it... but when he is a strong believer, he will see other people strong believers... find it... its not very deep in you

I love so much what Sharifo wrote - that's so true! No you didn't talk too much dear friend ... you just voiced what's on your mind and that's good so!
Eman, to your question ... I believe Ramadan feelings one can NOT find outside - they have to be searched for and discovered inside, inside one's soul and heart! Outside on the streets it is many times mainly business - like in Christianity Sanat Claus, Christmas and Easter! The REAL feeling is inside ... that's where you'll find it!
Thanks so much for sharing dear!! :)

Oh Eman, Ramadan in USA...it's hard to tell that it is Ramadan as muslims are minority here, and also they are being increasingly harassed these days. But as Karin said, we should look for Ramadan inside our hearts. Also, i try to read some articles about Ramadan which really helps me understand all the beautiful aspects of fasting.

I hope you are doing good.

What is everyone eating for suhur? It would be nice to know what type of food keeps us going the best. I can't even imagine how Gazans fast, as i'm sure that they don't have enough to eat for Iftar or suhur.

Hey Sanja,
I guess coz i live in Gaza, I'll be the best answring your question,
About The Suhur food, it usually be Light food like cheese, some Humus, something like this !!
and about food in Gaza, the situation in gaza is quite bad, but not so hard that people don't find food, pray for us to have a solution for our situation !!

Assalamu Alaikum,

I didn't know that you live in Gaza! I'm asking about the food in Gaza because, according to news, unemployment is at 75%, half of the population depends on humanitarian aid, and about 1.4 million Gazans are without electricity during most of the day. So, it looks like there is not much to eat, but i'm so glad that there is food. I guess, you are not affected by the electricity cut?

I try to eat some little heavy foods for suhur :) because i get dizzy during the day. Scientists say to eat some protein, such as lentils and humus, and also some complex sugars such as oat or brown rice.

And...the least we, who live outside of occupied territories, can do is to keep you in our du'as and prayers. Here in mosques, khatibs often mention Palestine and Lebanon and ask everyone to pray for them. Inshaallah, Allah will answer soon :)

Hey Sanja..
Great to see ya here again !!
All you said about Gaza is true..iam suffering from the lack of electricity, it's turning our lives like hell !!
Glad that you like Suhur, for me it's just too hard to sleep and wakeup for a meal, so I eat then sleep !!
and of course about the prayers, i always pray to Allah to see the day that we come back to our land Palestine, all of it, belive me you can't imagine the beauty of this land..

I have one suggestion for problem with waking up for suhur. If you go to sleep about 6.5 or 7 hours before suhur, then it will be easy to wake up, inshaallah, and you might even not need any extra sleep after suhur...maybe a nap throughout the day. This is actually how early muslims used to live!
